Sloganeering T-shirts not banned at school board meetings after all

Those passionate enough to wear their heart on their sleeve to address the region’s public school board can now officially bear their message on their shirt, too.

The Waterloo Region District School Board had a change of heart, voting against a policy change that would have banned delegates and their supporters from wearing clothing with slogans promoting their views on issues.

The board has for more than two years wrestled with revisions to its delegation policies, eyeing changes that could have included a dress code restricting what delegates are allowed to wear and bring to board meetings. However, many of the proposed changes, which would have prohibited clothing bearing slogans and a ban on placards, were deleted when the board officially approved its delegation process policies at a board meeting Jan. 26.
